DIARY of a BASKETBALL MOM (PART VI) - Post AAU Edition

Random things I learned this live period…

College coaches come for the player NOT just for the organization.

Many kids feel that if they go to certain programs they will get exposure to colleges and recruiters. This is ONLY true if your kid is on the floor and gets playing time. A bench kid is not getting any looks and isn’t getting any better!

A role player is also just that a role player, if your kid is not playing in their position how can they show what they can really do? Yes rebounding and defense are SUPER important. But at a certain age and grade level a player will need to do more on the floor to show that they are a well rounded asset in order to secure the bag.

Coaches reached out and came to us regardless of who we played with or where we were playing. We did our part by posting and reaching out and they showed up to all our tournaments.

Certain programs have more connections than others, but if they aren’t using them for you then you are WASTING YOUR TIME there.

NOT all AAU directors are created equal!

Politics is REAL in these streets, make sure you trust the people around your kid, but also do your own homework and reaching out to schools you are interested in and are interested in you.

Believe it our not there are directors who will withhold information from you regarding your child’s recruiting if it’s not in the programs best interest or agenda

I can’t stress this enough. People need to be INVESTED in your child and they need to show that by there actions not just their words.

Don’t be fooled by the glitz and glam! The HYPE machines are real.

I saw my kid do all types of dope shit on the court! But guess what? I don’t have a personal videographer following me around, so you will never see it.

The important thing though, is that the coaches did.

All these hyped up kids have good games and bad games. There is not one kid out there that stands head and shoulders above anyone.

Teach your kid to be a team player, but as a parent always put THEM FIRST! Do not sacrifice your kid’s career for the sake of being “nice”

Make sure your present, you are heard and that they (coaches/directors) know that you have your kid’s back and that you will hold them accountable - if need be.

Lastly!!!! Twitter is KING! Check who is following your kid and post, post, tag! Reach out to schools and coaches that follow your child. Follow schools and coaches your child is interested in.
